CSMS collaborates with various organizations and institutions. The primary purpose is to exchange ideas and create new knowledge about military organization and civil-military relations.
Here are some of the organizations that CSMS is currently collaborating with on various missions:
Scandinavian Military Studies (SMS) is a network of researchers and military personnel working on issues related to military practice and organization. The network consists of the Center for Studies of Military and Society, the Royal Danish Defense College, the Norwegian Defense University College, and the Center for Military Studies at the University of Copenhagen. SMS has its own scientific journal, Scandinavian Journal of Military Studies (SJMS). SJMS publishes articles and monographs with open access.
The Nordic Association for Research on Military Profession is a network of researchers interested in various aspects of the military profession from a Nordic perspective. The first joint project was to write an anthology together titled "Transformations of the Military Profession and Professionalism in Scandinavia". The book was published in 2021 and is available for download on the SJMS website. The network regularly participates in CSMS international conferences under the heading Modern Military Professionalism.
Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society (IUS) was founded in 1960 by Morris Janowitz at the University of Chicago. IUS is a forum where researchers, military personnel, and students have the opportunity to meet and exchange research findings and knowledge from military practice and civil-military relations. IUS has approximately 600 members from 35 countries. Since 1974, IUS has been publishing scientific articles in the journal Armed Forces & Society.
European Research Group on Military and Society (ERGOMAS) was organized in 1986. ERGOMAS started as a European network of researchers interested in various aspects and relations between the military and society. Today, its members come from all over the world. ERGOMAS members meet regularly in various working groups and hold international conferences every other year.
The SOM Institute is an impartial research organization at the University of Gothenburg. Since 1986, the SOM Institute has worked together with researchers in various fields to illuminate opinions and understand Swedish societal development. From the beginning, the SOM Institute has focused on the habits, behaviors, opinions, and values of Swedes regarding society, politics, and media. The Swedish population's perceptions of defense and security policy are examined and the results are published in the annual SOM book.
Defence Position supports CSMS' work and research activities by making research results accessible to the defense sector and other organizations and authorities such as universities and colleges. This is done through various communication efforts and the production of film, images, and text.
